Palacio del Conde Gran Reserva 2006
Smooth, complex, ready-now Gran Reserva from Valencia, brimming with spicy strawberry and creamy oak
Where else can you buy mellow barrel aged reds of such remarkable quality and price? Not only is today’s Spanish wine scene âamong the most vibrant, dynamic and creative in the worldâ (Tim Atkin MW), it surely offers the best value. Valencia is known as âMadrid by the sea’ as Madrilenos flock there for relaxation. Inland there are orange groves and paddy fields – it’s where paella is said to have been invented – and of course, vineyards. Winemaker Maria Angeles Camara selected the finest, hand harvested Tempranillo grapes for this Gran Reserva, then aged the wine for two years in oak barrels. With its dark, juicy flavours and soft vanilla tones, this fragrant, silky red is in its element with duck or lamb or tapas such as jamon serrano.
